Mai ‘68

“May 68 began with the cinema” considers George Adair as he compares the catalystic effect of Henri Langlois’ removal as curator from the Cinémathèque Française (think French BFI) on May 68- to the assassination of Franz Ferdiand on the First World War.

Be young and shut up

Whilst Langlois was shortly reinstated, the whole event was only really symptomatic of larger political issues in France and a sign of things to come. This May sees us 50 years removed from the student protests, and cultural revolution of the time that lead to the fall of the De Gaulle government and in light of the anniversary there is a a wealth of screenings and events reflecting and remembering this fateful month.

Still Cinema

With photo shoots requiring the same elaborate production values and styling of a film shoot, you’d surely be forgiven for mistaking the work of New York photographer Gregory Crewdson’s as stills from a Lynch/ Cronenberg-esque upcoming feature…(images from his upcoming exhibition certainly caught me off guard whilst browsing the first few pages of Sight and Sound this month)

‘ALL ABOARD’ …inspired by their upcoming screenings of the Darjeeling Limited at the Roxy they’ve dedicated this week’s Sunday Cinema to the subject of trains. The resulting line up seems like a fine way to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon (if you’re lucky enough to have one spare)

The Secret of Nimh | Electric Cinema

In a 2nd hand shop somewhere in the UK sit many a Don Bluth VHS from my own childhood collection. Although kind of a 80/90’s B grade Disney there were still some classics in the Bluth back-cat, The Land Before Time (followed up by endless sequels, and sing along cash ins), An American Tale (I think we can safely skip Rock a Doodle) and most of these still have a special space in my heart…
