Independent film in the big smoke and occasionally beyond
I’ve been meaning to write this post for some time after the subject of the Hackers soundtrack came up on twitter, it reminded me how happy I am that we all live in the future with so many computers and high tech gadgets at our disposal. Something which makes me even happier is when Hollywood decides to tap into this and make movies about it, e.g. getting e-mail, virtual reality, hacking into the FBI mainframe, uploading viruses into alien space ships…. I’ve got a badge to prove it and everything as W.O.F’s accreditation at the London Film Festival came through this fine morn.
Its going to be a funny festival this year for myself as I will be attempting to straddle both sides of the fence with my distributor hat on for my day job at Soda Pictures (who have 5 fabulous films in the festival… see here for more info). The subjects of adverts and independent cinema seem to be joined at the hip of late after the hub bub surrounding the Nike/ Beautiful Loosers marketing, Eurostar/ Somer’s Town release and Harmony Korine’s Thornton’s/ Budweiser campaigns and so on. And heck why should September buck the trend as Shane Meadow’s jumps into the fray again with his latest directorial outting, a UK tv ad campaign as part of the “Act on CO2” campaign. (Spotted in today’s Metro during my morning commute). Presenting the Autumn ‘08 Knitwear collection from Co-operative Designs (London based knitwear label headed up by Annalisa Dunn and Dorothee Hagemann) that were inspired by the film’s of Dario Argento and Jan Švankmajer. As you’d imagine muses such as these won’t give way to your everyday bobble hats & scarves, but looking over the creations they are decidedly less unsettling than I would have expected (no creepy string puppets here, just lots of Llamas). I’m not afraid of the dark, I’m afraid of the evil it conceals…
Not that I’d want to slot Fear(s) of the Dark into a box, but this animated release in the UK seems to me to be finally following up where Sylvian Chomet’s Belleville Rendez-vous left off. Firstly apologies for posts being sparse lately- my excuse being that as I’ve currently moved house, (and considering we all still live in the dark ages) it’ll be another 10-20 years before I’m connected to the internet again. In the meantime I’ll be sneaking things up as and when I can.
Back to the subject at hand… I spotted today over at the Londonist that in a bid to help combat cinema goers disturbed cinematic enjoyment the Picturehouse chain are considering a ban on popcorn.
Now I’m the first to admit that in cinemas the rustle and chomping of others is something I’m finely tuned in to, much to my disgust and annoyance during movies. But to ban such a classic cinematic snack saddens me. Popcorn munching to me is just the tip of the iceberg as far as annoying cinema based noises go and I can’t say I’ve ever held an individual grudge for popcorn. No, I hold one against all eating related noises (and fizzy pop slurping, breathing, coughing, individually foil wrapped sweets… I could go on). Continue reading ‘Picturehouse Popcorn Scrooges’
