LWLies Film Knights | Heavy Metal in Baghdad

Heavy Metal

Its that time again for another free screening of great cinema c/o Little White Lies. I don’t know too much about the film yet but I have faith in their judgment (I’m willing to forgive and forget their screening of Fast Food Nation a while back)- I will definitely be going and hope you are too- its free so what’s your excuse?

I’m also told that their new Gommorah issue should be hitting the shelves at some point this weekend, fingers crossed. If you’ve not yet had a chance to check out the mag then you should as its a really great magazine made by a ’solid’ group of people.

LWLies Film Knights | Heavy Metal in Baghdad | Dir. Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi
Heavy Metal in Baghdad
is a feature film documentary that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition but after Saddam’s regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. From 2003-2006, Iraq disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.
