If its not Iron Man, the Hulk’s ‘not-any-better-not-a-sequel’, another Hellboy or the shiny new Watchmen trailer (which I agree with Graeme McMillan’s comments on i09 that is perhaps looking a little too shiny) then its people writing and talking about comics- like me. But then again I’m not so sure this Summer is all that different from those gone by in terms of the dearth of comic adapts.
Being a fair weather comic fan I’m slowly getting into the seasonal spirit and am glad to see the ICA and BFI joining in with all the hype and hoohar by bringing a retro and eclectic array of films to the mix.
First up is the BFI’s Comic-Book Movie season starting yesterday and running through to the end of August. They’re playing classics (the kind that remind me of successful channel hopping on a Sunday afternoon in the 90s) such as The Rocketeer, Flash Gordon and Dick Tracey, some more recent releases, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and some from in-between, Spiderman (1,2 & 3), Ghost World and Mystery Men. Also on June Aug 5th there’s also a special 2000AD chin wag with some of the weekly’s many editors, writers and artists.
Over at the ICA, and a bit cheaper (read free) if you happen to be a student, Westminster resident or ICA member (and also able to watch films as mid week matinees) with their Comica Family Matinees from the 26th of July also through to the end of August. Although its not strictly just comic adaptations the season will be featuring, Hayao Miyazaki’s directorial feature début The Castle of Cagliostro, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and 2 x Hellboy animated features.
And if all that still isn’t enough to drag you away from catching The Dark Knight when it opens next week- then why not at least tie it in with a spot of Joker inspired face painting c/o the Curzon Soho & The Scenery Chewer on July 25th from 7pm.
In fact re reading this post I think I’d be more surprised if people managed to watch a film at the cinema in the next weeks that wasn’t comic related- if you do let me know and I’ll send you a special commemorative badge.*
*(I promise I will actually make you a badge)
