A whole blissful world away from the Wall-Es, Kung Fu Pandas and ‘ant’ based CGI kids films of the world- comes ‘Past-Potential-Futures Early Experiments in Computer Animation’ this weekend at The Tate Modern as part of their ‘Lond Weekend’ free event/ festival on the 24-26th.

As a fan of the work of early animators, Len Lye, Oskar Fischinger and Norman Mclaren I’m always amazed at the sheer experimental, intricate and creative results in their films whilst only being reliant on traditional methods.
But beyond early pixar I’m ashamed that I’m lacking in knowledge of early computer animations, so I’m looking forward to this opportunity to see how the films of animators in the 60s and 70s evolved and experimented with new technologies- and in a time free from the creatively draining durge of mass produced CGI.
The screening brings together films from the 60s and 70s from artists working at Bell Laboratories at IBM and includes … Charles Csuri, Ed Emshwiller, Pierre Hébert, Denys Irving, Kenneth Knowlton, Malcolm Le Grice, Lillian Schwartz, John Stehura, Stan VanDerBeek. Details…
