I’ve got a badge to prove it and everything as W.O.F’s accreditation at the London Film Festival came through this fine morn.
Its going to be a funny festival this year for myself as I will be attempting to straddle both sides of the fence with my distributor hat on for my day job at Soda Pictures (who have 5 fabulous films in the festival… see here for more info). Then I’ll have my press hat on for when I’ll be covering other peoples films. Continue reading ‘We’re Now Officially a Blog’

The subjects of adverts and independent cinema seem to be joined at the hip of late after the hub bub surrounding the Nike/ Beautiful Loosers marketing, Eurostar/ Somer’s Town release and Harmony Korine’s Thornton’s/ Budweiser campaigns and so on. And heck why should September buck the trend as Shane Meadow’s jumps into the fray again with his latest directorial outting, a UK tv ad campaign as part of the “Act on CO2” campaign. (Spotted in today’s Metro during my morning commute). Presenting the Autumn ‘08 Knitwear collection from Co-operative Designs (London based knitwear label headed up by Annalisa Dunn and Dorothee Hagemann) that were inspired by the film’s of Dario Argento and Jan Švankmajer. As you’d imagine muses such as these won’t give way to your everyday bobble hats & scarves, but looking over the creations they are decidedly less unsettling than I would have expected (no creepy string puppets here, just lots of Llamas). Continue reading ‘Knitting Argento & Švankmajer’

Firstly apologies for posts being sparse lately- my excuse being that as I’ve currently moved house, (and considering we all still live in the dark ages) it’ll be another 10-20 years before I’m connected to the internet again. In the meantime I’ll be sneaking things up as and when I can.
Back to the subject at hand… I spotted today over at the Londonist that in a bid to help combat cinema goers disturbed cinematic enjoyment the Picturehouse chain are considering a ban on popcorn.
Now I’m the first to admit that in cinemas the rustle and chomping of others is something I’m finely tuned in to, much to my disgust and annoyance during movies. But to ban such a classic cinematic snack saddens me. Popcorn munching to me is just the tip of the iceberg as far as annoying cinema based noises go and I can’t say I’ve ever held an individual grudge for popcorn. No, I hold one against all eating related noises (and fizzy pop slurping, breathing, coughing, individually foil wrapped sweets… I could go on). Continue reading ‘Picturehouse Popcorn Scrooges’

There’s not been a lot coming out of comic-con this year that’s pricked up my ears, other than the news of the Tron sequel clip screening. I was beginning to wonder whether anyone had bothered to take phones in, or had annoyingly strong morals due to the lack of clips popping up online, but thankfully they now seem to be popping up as quick as Mickey Mouse can whip them down. “Bracing for KAPOW! headlines tomorrow re. Batman, Batmum and Batsis” (Sizemore).
I don’t know whether to be disappointed or reaffirmed yesterdays complete lack of decent Batman/ Bale headlines (although I wasn’t able to catch The Sun). Instead the papers from what I’ve seen seem content as simply labelling Bale as Batman. Surely the tabloid’s inter office e-mails/ text messages must be fit to bursting with puns of unfulfilled potential. Continue reading ‘Where are all the Batman Puns?’

I spotted this lurking at the Tesco on Liverpool Street yesterday which I think is a relatively new addition. Sadly my short lunch break twinned with the lady faffing at the machine prevented me from investigating further. However I’ve scoured the net and found that its part of a trial DVD rental booth scheme between Tesco and Movie Booth. Continue reading ‘Tesco Movie Booths’

Its my blog and I’ll self promote if I want to! Well this is relevant to W.O.F. readers, and all work connections aside My Winnipeg is one of my favourite films I’ve caught so far this year- so I’ll allow it this time. Continue reading ‘Your Winnipeg Filmmaking Competition Launches Today!’

It wasn’t an entirely unexpected announcement, not simply owing the closure of Tartan’s US Video arm at Cannes, but the rumour mill had been churning for a while and yesterday c/o Twitter I learnt that after 20 plus years of business UK distributor Tartan had closed their doors.

Oh my goodness did you know that cinema attendance figures are falling? What on earth is a film industry to do? Well thankfully those smart brains over at Neilsen PreView have pointed out that we might not need to rebuild the whole distribution model- as there’s a far easier answer … make 3D movies.
